When you have your home on the market, it's crucial to control access and lock things up securely. You'll have strangers traipsing through your private space on a regular basis. The last thing you want is for them to help themselves to your possessions or compromise your home's security in other ways.

Start by changing all the locks if you haven't already. Even if you've lost no keys, you don't know if any copies were made by previous owners, tenants, real estate agents or repair workers. Rekeying locks is an inexpensive way to ensure control of who can enter your home. Use high-quality deadbolts on all exterior doors.

You'll also want to lock interior doors to rooms you don't want buyers accessing, like bedrooms and home offices. Make it clear during showings that certain areas are off limits. Hiding irreplaceable items like jewelry in a locked safe that buyers won't have access to is also a smart move.

When prospective buyers tour your home, don't allow them to roam around unattended. Accompany them through each room so you can keep an eye on their actions. Pay attention in case they linger too long in one area or seem to be casing the place more than shopping for a new home. Trust your instincts if someone gives you an odd vibe.

Restrict access to your garage, shed, attic and any outbuildings by locking them up tight as well. Remove any tools, ladders or other items a trespasser could use to break in later. Never leave house keys easily accessible by hiding them outside or sharing locker combinations.
